Who can broadcast a message?

Computing Services and Systems Development has established guidelines for broadcast messages.

Broadcast message service is available only to Pitt departments and recognized student groups. No messages announcing or promoting commercial business activities or endorsing religious views or political candidates or positions are permitted.

Text for broadcast messages should be faxed to the telecommunications manager at 8-5929.

Messages must be faxed on University letterhead and endorsed by a department head. The message should be as brief as possible (20 words is the suggested length) and should provide a number to call for further information.

Messages must be of interest to a large section of the University. But messages may be sent to students only, to faculty and staff only, or to all voicemail users.

Messages promoting fund-raisers must benefit a recognized community organization or recognized University student group, or be targeted toward a Pitt scholarship fund.

Messages that advertise an event sponsored by a Pitt unit or recognized student organization are permitted.

Messages normally are sent in a single broadcast scheduled to run from Tuesday through Saturday each week. Messages must be received before 3:30 p.m. on Monday for that week’s Tuesday broadcast. There needs to be a reasonably compelling reason for messages to be broadcast on days other than Tuesday.

There is no charge for this service.
