Gift establishes UPT scholarship

Pitt’s Titusville campus has received $228,000 from the estate of Ruth R. Gilson to establish a special scholarship fund.

The Ruth R. Gilson Scholarship Fund will provide scholarships to graduates of the Titusville Area School District who wish to attend UPT, who demonstrate a financial need and who meet the established admissions criteria.

“We are extremely appreciative of Ms. Gilson’s generous gift,” said UPT President Michael A. Worman. “It reinforces the importance of education by providing deserving students with an opportunity to attend UPT and realize their academic dreams.”

Kenneth E. Winger, superintendent of the Titusville school district, said, “This will certainly give our students a nice opportunity to begin their college experience at the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville, which offers a beautiful campus setting and a convenient, economical step into the Pitt educational system.”

According to John R. Mumford, executive director of enrollment management at UPT, six $2,000 scholarships will be awarded on a yearly basis. The first scholarships are currently under consideration and will be awarded for fall 2003, he said.
