Pitt is 7th in NIH funds

According to recently released figures by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for fiscal year 2004, Pitt ranks No. 7 nationally in NIH funding among educational institutions with affiliates, the same overall ranking as last year.

Affiliates consist of a group of associated institutions in the geographical area where university faculty have appointments and direct grants that have been secured through those institutions, e.g., in Pitt’s case, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and Magee-Womens Hospital.

Pitt and its affiliates garnered 1,022 grants totaling $395.9 million from NIH.

Of Pitt’s NIH total, 84 percent was funding for the Schools of the Health Sciences, according to the Office of Research, Health Sciences.

Following is a breakdown of Pitt NIH awards by Health Sciences school with rankings among comparable schools nationally.

• Dental medicine ranked 28th with $2.9 million in NIH grants. It ranked 22nd last year.

• Health and rehabilitation sciences was 10th (9th last year) with $1.3 million in grants.

• Medicine and affiliates were 8th (9th last year) with $305.8 million in grants.

• Nursing was 7th among similar schools with $4.5 million in grants. The school ranked 6th last year.

• Pharmacy ranked 11th (10th last year) with $6.7 million.

• Public health was ranked 3rd among similar schools, the same as last year’s ranking, with NIH grants totaling $47.5 million.
