Pitt’s University Center for Social and Urban Research (UCSUR) has awarded the fifth annual Steven D. Manners Faculty Development Awards, established in memory of the center’s assistant director who died in 2000 at age 49.

The awards, according to UCSUR director Richard Schulz, are intended to “continue the trend begun by Steve Manners, which was to support faculty members and their research and to improve the research infrastructure at the University.”

This year’s winners are:

• Charlotte Brown, associate professor of psychiatry and faculty affiliate, Center on Race and Social Problems, for her project: “Depression Stigma, Race and Treatment Seeking Behavior and Attitudes.”

• Eva Marie Shivers, assistant professor, psychology in education, School of Education, for “Take Extra Care: African American Family, Friend and Neighbor Child Care Study.”

• Bruce S. Ling, assistant professor of medicine, Institute for Doctor-Patient Communication, for “Patient-Provider Communication Symposium: Enhancing Research Skills.”

UCSUR offers annual awards in two categories: (1) research development grants to support pilot research in the social, behavioral and policy sciences; and (2) infrastructure development awards aimed at enhancing faculty capabilities to carry out interdisciplinary research in the social, behavioral and policy sciences.
