University Press book covers win design awards

The Huffington Post, an Internet newspaper of politics and culture, recently included two University of Pittsburgh Press book covers on its list of the 25 best cover designs of 2010.

Covers for “Re-Reading Poets: The Life of the Author” by Paul Kameen, Pitt associate professor of English, and “The Physics of Imaginary Objects” by Tina May Hall, winner of the 2010 Drue Heinz Literature Prize for short fiction, made the list. Hall is an assistant professor of English at Hamilton College.

The “Re-Reading Poets” cover was designed by the University Press’s production director, Ann Walston, with art from Bridget Kameen.

The book jacket for “The Physics of Imaginary Objects” was created by Landesberg Design of Pittsburgh.

Two other University of Pittsburgh Press publications recently have been selected for design awards by the Association of American University Presses: Franklin Toker’s “Pittsburgh: A New Portrait,” also designed by Landesberg, and Jonathan Massey’s “Crystal and Arabesque: Claude Bragdon, Ornament and Modern Architecture,” designed by Binocular, New York.

Pitt’s Toker is a professor of art and architecture. Massey is an associate professor of art and architecture at Syracuse.

“Pittsburgh” and “Crystal and Arabesque” will be on display as part of the AAUP book and jacket show in the Latin American lecture room, first floor of the Hillman Library. The display — featuring 56 award-winning books and 40 award-winning covers — runs through Jan. 21.
