Arthur S. Levine comments on Robert Arnold's appointment

Arthur S. Levine, Pitt senior vice chancellor for Health Sciences and medical school dean, on Robert Arnold's appointment:

"The selection of the first Leo H. Criep, M.D., Professor of Patient Care is a national milestone in bringing long overdue attention to the doctor-patient relationship as the very soul of the medical profession.

"Dr. Bob Arnold's personal philosophy of that relationship and the way in which he implements his philosophy in his teaching, his research, and — most importantly — his direct care of patients is true to the spirit in which this unique endowment was established. In teaching medical students, Bob is deeply concerned about helping them to develop the communication skills they will need not just to provide appropriate medical care but to understand and relate to patients within the context of their own lives and their own families — in other words, to treat both body and spirit."
