Compensation committee to meet

Pitt trustees are expected to approve pay raises today for Chancellor Mark Nordenberg and seven other University officers.

The trustees' compensation committee, which is authorized to approve the compensation (salaries plus benefits) of top Pitt officials, is scheduled to meet at 11 a.m. The meeting, at 159 Cathedral of Learning, is open to the public. But compensation committee members probably won't be physically present. They are expected to conduct the meeting via a conference telephone call.

The committee sets the chancellor's compensation and considers the chancellor's recommendations for increasing the pay of other Pitt officers.

Since 1997, trustees have approved performance incentive bonuses in addition to annual salary raises for Chancellor Nordenberg. Last year, trustees awarded Nordenberg a $35,000 bonus and a 6 percent raise that increased his current base salary to $265,000.

Last year, for the first time, trustees okayed performance bonuses for other Pitt officers at Nordenberg's recommendation: $25,000 for Provost James Maher, $20,000 for Executive Vice Chancellor Jerome Cochran and $10,000 for Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement Carol Carter.

University officials would not release this year's proposed officer pay increases prior to today's meeting. Increases will be retroactive to July 1, the beginning of Pitt's fiscal year.
