The highs and lows of average Pitt salaries

Both the highest and lowest median sala- ries among the ranks of non-unionized Pitt employees last year were in the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences.

Among the office's six executive, administrative and managerial staff, the median salary was $173,825. That included Senior Vice Chancellor Arthur S. Levine's salary of $537,000, the highest of any Pitt employee. (That's excluding consulting fees, clinical income from the UPMC Health System and other non-University compensation that many faculty members receive).

Among the 13 secretarial and clerical employees in Levine's office, the median pay was $15,900.

Those highs and lows appear in a report by Pitt's Office of Institutional Research, in accordance with Pennsylvania's financial disclosure requirements for state-funded universities.

The report reveals mean (average) and median (the middle point at which an equal number of employees earn more or less) salaries for major ranks of full-time, non-unionized faculty, staff and administrators in each Pitt responsibility unit as of Oct. 31, 2000.

"Salary" as defined by the report includes all contract salaries paid by the University, whether the source was Pitt salary funds, a research grant awarded to Pitt, an endowment or other source.

Salaries of faculty on 12-month contracts were converted to nine-month (standard academic year) contracts. Staff salaries covered 12 months.

The report, released March 29, attributes employees' salaries to the responsibility centers through which their employee records were processed.

To avoid revealing individuals' pay, the report does not list salaries for groups with three or fewer employees.

Staff/administration highs and lows The report divides staff into four categories:

* Executive, administrative and managerial employees.

* Other professionals.

* Secretarial and clerical.

* Technical, skilled and service.
