Evelyn Granieri, associate professor of medicine in the division of geriatric medicine in the School of Medicine, is the recipient of the 2001 Dennis W. Jahnigen Memorial Award from the American Geriatrics Society.

Granieri was acknowledged for more than 15 years of experience in developing unique programs in geriatrics education at the University. Her students participate in a program called Geriatric Education for Medical Students that provides outreach and care to the area's homebound elderly. She also initiated a memoir program that trains medical students to record the life history of older patients in order to gain a sense of respect and compassion for the elderly.

"This is a welcome and well-deserved tribute to Dr. Granieri's passion, commitment and function as a role model for all of our trainees," said Neil Resnick, chief of the division of geriatric medicine. "Her efforts, along with those of the rest of the division's faculty, have resulted in more of our students being awarded competitive research fellowships and more of our residents entering the field of geriatrics than occurs virtually anywhere else in the nation."

Granieri is director of education services for geriatric medicine at the School of Medicine as well as fellowship director for the division. She also is associate director of education for the Pittsburgh Veterans Administration Geriatric Research, Educational and Clinical Center.

Helen Ruggieri, assistant professor of writing at the Bradford campus, is one of 22 faculty members in the United States to receive a Sasakawa Fellowship, which helps college and university teachers incorporate Japanese studies into their undergraduate courses.

This month Ruggieri is attending the National Faculty Development Institute where she will participate in intensive seminar and attend lectures, readings and cultural activities focused on Japanese culture, literature, history, government, business and education.

For the last few summers, Ruggieri taught English to Japanese students attending Bradford's summer intensive English program. Last summer she spent 10 weeks in Yokohama as a visiting professor, again teaching English.

Deborah Perry and Lisa Griffith have been appointed assistant coaches for the women's basketball team. Assistant coach Bill Broderick has been promoted to associate head coach.

Perry most recently was on the women's basketball staff at the University of Buffalo. She also coached at West Virginia State College, Ohio University, Southern University and A&M College. She is a graduate of South Carolina State.

Grifffith, a former student-athlete under Pitt coach Traci Waites at the University of Arizona, was a four-year letter winner and earned honorable mention All-Pac 10. She made three consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament and one appearance in the Sweet 16 as a member of the Wildcat basketball squad. She graduated last year.

Broderick is in his fourth year with the Panthers. A graduate of Frostburg State, he coached there and at Potomac State College before joining Waites when she was coaching at Arizona.

Nancy Grove and Judith Kaufmann are the winners of the School of Nursing's 2001 Dean's Distinguished Teaching Award.
