Biomedical informatics to be consolidated

The Board of Trustees property and facilities committee has approved a seven-year lease that will consolidate the Department of Biomedical Informatics in a single location at 5607 Baum Blvd.

In a brief meeting Dec. 12, the committee approved the lease between the University and Baum Boulevard Investor, L.P., owner of The Offices at Baum, for 30,624 square feet of space on the building’s 4th and 5th floors at an annual cost of $811,536.

According to background information, the Department of Biomedical Informatics has direct grant support of approximately $20 million through fiscal year 2013. It is funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Department of Defense, the Pennsylvania Department of Public Health, the Agency for Health Research and Quality and others, as well as a by training grant from the National Library of Medicine. Several grants are pending.

The department currently leases 23,263 square feet of space in two separate locations in Shadyside and Oakland. Its research, teaching and administrative functions will be consolidated in the new offices. The space will provide a central location where master’s and doctoral students in the biomedical informatics training program will take classes and pursue their research.

The lease runs April 1, 2012-March 31, 2019, with increases of 1 percent per year. The lease also includes a five-year renewal option to extend the lease through March 2024.
