OBITUARY: Elizabeth Esler Duncan

Elizabeth (Libby) Esler Duncan, a long-time employee of the University, died Oct. 11, 2001.

Duncan was an associate professor in the School of Information Sciences from 1983 through 1991. She pioneered the teaching of electronic database searching.

She also served the University in other capacities. She was coordinator of the On-line Training Center here from 1977 to 1986. From 1971 to 1977, she was coordinator of Pitt's campus-based information systems. She also worked as a librarian in the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs from 1966 to 1968.

Prior to coming to Pitt, Duncan worked as a research assistant at the University of Pennsylvania, as a research associate at Carnegie Mellon University, and as a librarian at the Beirut College for Women.

She graduated from Chatham College in 1943 with a B.S. in chemistry and biology. She earned her Master of Library Science degree in 1963 and her doctorate in library science in 1971, both from SIS. She received the school's Distinguished Alumna Award in 1992.

She served as president of the local chapter of the American Society for Information Science, 1982-83.
