Obituary: Robin D. Weschitz

Robin D. Weschitz, long-time staff member in the Office of the University Registrar, died of cancer Feb. 24, 2012. She was 57.

Weschitz came to Pitt in 1975 as a temporary employee. The following year, she was hired as a regular staff member by the Registrar’s office, where she held a number of positions over the years. At the time of her death, Weschitz was a course catalog analyst.

According to Registrar office administrators, prior to her death Weschitz expressed the wish that “nothing elaborate be printed about her in the University Times.”

Friends and colleagues remembered her as a warm, caring person who was helpful to work with and pleasant to spend time with.

“She was like a sister to me,” said long-time co-worker Rita Kanarkowski. “She didn’t have any sisters, so I would tell her: You can be my sister. I can take in another one.”

Kanarkowski noted that she and Weschitz worked in tandem in performing the office’s scheduling duties. “If people needed help with classroom scheduling, we used to say: You need an ‘R and R’” — for Robin and Rita, Kanarkowski said.

“Robin fought a courageous battle against cancer, and she didn’t let it get her down,” Kanarkowski added. “She also was fun to work with. She had a unique sense of humor, including her collection of toys. I miss her very much.”

Weschitz’s supervisor Dan Stump said, “I only worked with her for five and a half years, but in that time got to appreciate her dedication and her warm personality. It was very admirable how she handled her illness. We all admired her for that.”

Weschitz is survived by an aunt, Audrey Stiles; cousins in Ohio and Florida, and best friends Connie Hogue and Lutz Carreon.
