4 students win major scholarships

Four Pitt undergraduate students have won national scholarships: Three were named 2012 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship winners, and one received a Morris K. Udall Scholarship.

Goldwater winners are Chancellor’s Scholar , a junior majoring in molecular biology and history with a minor in chemistry, and Pitt Honors Scholars Paras S. Minhas,

a junior majoring in microbiology with minors in mathematics and chemistry, and Matthew A. B. Schaff, a junior majoring in neuroscience and economics.

Goldwater winners are recognized for independent research in the natural sciences, mathematics and engineering. Awarded in either a student’s sophomore or junior year, the scholarship goes toward tuition, room and board, fees and books for the recipient’s remaining period of study.

Pitt’s Udall Scholarship winner is Chancellor’s Scholar Keely McCaskie, a junior who is working toward a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in international area studies with a concentration in sustainability in Latin America and bachelor’s degrees in environmental studies and in sociology.

Udall scholarships provide funding for students intending to pursue careers related to the environment, as well as to Native American students pursuing tribal policy or health care careers.
