Marathon training seminars start Jan. 12

To help runners of all levels with their preparation for the 2002 UPMC Health System/City of Pittsburgh Marathon on May 5, New Balance Athletic Shoe, Inc. will present UPMC's annual free training seminar series.

The first seminar will be from 10 a.m.-noon on Jan. 12, in the LHAS auditorium, UPMC Montefiore. Following the seminar, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., UPMC athletic trainers and physical therapists will provide runners with free musculoskeletal screenings at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine, 3200 South Water Street on the South Side.

The morning seminar's presentations will include:

* A welcome message and information — Larry Grollman, marathon race director;

* Training and preparing for a marathon — Abe Friedman, UPMC Shadyside cardiologist and marathon runner;

* Nutrition for marathon training — Leslie Bonci, UPMC sports nutritionist and marathon runner;

* Selecting the proper running shoe — New Balance representative, and

* Enhancing sports performance — Kim Kreidler, certified athletic trainer, strength/conditioning coach and director of personal training for UPMC Sports Performance Program.

The remaining seminars in the series are: — Feb. 9, 10 a.m.-noon, in S100A Biomedical Science Tower. The topics will involve principles of training and common errors.

— March 23, 10 a.m.-noon, in UPMC Montefiore's LHAS auditorium. The speakers will discuss planning appropriate rest and recovery after the marathon.

— May 4, 2-4 p.m., in the Three Rivers Room of the Omni William Penn Hotel, Downtown. Final race-day preparations will be covered.
