Smitherman wins Senate presidency

SmithermanWinners of the election for University Senate officers and new members of Faculty Assembly were announced last week.

The new Senate president is Thomas C. Smitherman, professor in the Department of Medicine, School of Medicine.

James T. Becker, professor of psychiatry, psychology and neurology in the Department of Psychiatry, School of Medicine, is the new vice president.

Incumbent Linda Frank, who ran unopposed, returns for a second term as secretary. Frank is an associate professor in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology, Graduate School of Public Health.

Senate officers will serve one-year terms beginning July 1.

Newly elected members to Faculty Assembly serve the first year of their three-year terms on the Assembly; during their second and third years, they serve on both the faculty-only Assembly and on Senate Council, which includes faculty, staff, students and administrators.

The winners are:

School of Arts and Sciences

  • Humanities: Anna Nisnevich (music).
  • Natural Sciences: Russell Clark (physics and astronomy); Marta Lewicka (mathematics).
  • Social Sciences: Martha Chaiklin (history).

Professional schools

  • Education: M. Najeeb Shafiq.
  • Engineering: Patrick Smolinski.
  • Information Sciences: Michael Spring.
  • Law: Nancy Burkoff.
  • Public and International Affairs: Jerome McKinney.
  • Social Work: Keith Caldwell.

The Katz Graduate School of Business had no candidates.

Schools of the Health Sciences

  • Medicine: Samuel Tisherman; Jordan Karp; Kevin Gibson.
  • Public Health: Jane Cauley.

University Library System:

  • Claire Withers.

There were no openings this year for new Assembly members from the School of Dental Medicine, the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, the School of Nursing, the Health Sciences Library System or the School of Pharmacy.

Pitt’s regional campuses elect their own representatives to Faculty Assembly.

The winners of the election for the University Senate’s 15 standing committees are expected to be published in the May 3 issue of the University Times. Senate committee elections run through April 21.
