Stanley Donald Imber, professor emeritus of psychiatry in the School of Medicine, died June 9, 2005, of heart failure. He was 82.

Imber joined the Pitt faculty in 1974 as a professor of psychiatry, with a secondary appointment as a professor of psychology in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. He was awarded emeritus status in 1992. Since retirement, he had lived in La Jolla, California.

While at Pitt, Imber was the principal or co-principal investigator on several National Institute of Mental Health grants focusing on depression.

At Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, he served as director of the Psychotherapy of Depression Clinic, the Individual Psychotherapy Program and Clinic, the Office of Psychotherapy Programs and the Group Therapy Clinic and Institute for Group Training and Research.

He served as president of the Society for Psychotherapy Research, 1981-82.

Prior to joining the Pitt faculty, Imber was on the faculty at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, 1953-1974.

He earned an A.B. in psychology from Harvard College in 1948, did graduate work at Princeton University then earned his Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Rochester in 1953.
