People of the Times

Pitt police officers were among the recipients of this year’s Senator John Heinz Law Enforcement Awards.

Lt. David Basile, Sgt. Dan Papale and officers Joshua Acre, Ron Bennett, Guy Johnson, Tom Lasky, Stephen Tomovic, Brian Turak, Brian Veze and Joseph Washinski won the 911 Quick Response Award for responding to John Shick’s March shooting rampage at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic. Pitt police killed Shick after he had killed one person and wounded five others.

Tristan Lucchetti, Health Sciences Library System business manager, has been accepted into the Pittsburgh Civic Leadership Academy. The 10-week course was created by Mayor Luke Ravenstahl to foster effective civic leadership. Course activities give an up-close view of how the city is run and culminate in a city service project.

The Board of Trustees nominating committee nominated George L. Miles Jr., chair emeritus of Chester Engineers and retired president and chief executive officer of WQED Multimedia, and Thomas H. O’Brien, retired chair of PNC Financial Services Group, for election as emeritus trustees. The full board is scheduled to act on the nominations Oct. 26.

Miles served on the board 2000-12. He chaired the audit committee for seven years and served on the executive, athletics, budget and conflict of interest committees.

He is a member of the School of Social Work board of visitors and previously served on the boards of the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business and the University of Pittsburgh Press.

O’Brien served on the board 1985-2012. He served on the executive, property and facilities, institutional advancement, nominating and investment committees. He served on the investment committee for nearly two decades and was its chair for 11 years.

He also chaired the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business board of visitors for seven years and continues as a member.
