Rankings released recently by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) show that Pitt's Graduate School of Public Health (GSPH) is third among the nation's 30 schools of public health in total NIH research grant funding, making it the leading state-related public health school on the list. Harvard and Johns Hopkins universities ranked first and second, respectively.

For fiscal year 2001, GSPH received 57 NIH research grants totaling $38,315,119, which represents a 23 percent increase over NIH funds received in fiscal year 2000 by the public health school.

"We are very proud of our new ranking," said Bernard Goldstein, dean of GSPH. "It is a testament to the world-class researchers at the Graduate School of Public Health and to the importance of the work they do in bettering the health of people all over the globe."

In addition to the substantial increase in NIH funding, GSPH also received $1.7 million from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in fiscal year 2001 for the establishment of two new CDC centers at the school — the Center for Healthy Aging and the Center for Public Health Practice.

The only fully accredited school of public health in Pennsylvania, GSPH is one of eight schools across the country to be designated a Public Health Training Center by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
