Incumbent University Senate officers all have challengers in this year’s elections.

Thomas C. Smitherman

Running for Senate president against incumbent Thomas C. Smitherman, a professor in the Department of Medicine, School of Medicine, is Michael Spring, an associate professor in the School of Information Sciences.

Vice president James T. Becker, professor of psychiatry, psychology and neurology in the Department of Psychiatry, School of Medicine, will face Irene Frieze, a professor in the Department of Psychology, Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences.

Secretary Linda Frank, who is serving her second consecutive term, is being challenged by Kathleen Kelly, an assistant professor and vice chair of the Department of Physical Therapy, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences.

Frank, an associate professor in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology, Graduate School of Public Health, ran unopposed last year.

Senate officers serve one-year terms beginning July 1.

Online voting for Senate officers and Faculty Assembly members is set for April 5-20.

There are three Faculty Assembly vacancies in medicine; two each in humanities, natural sciences, social sciences and engineering, and one vacancy each in dental medicine, education, health and rehabilitation sciences, nursing, pharmacy, public and international affairs, public health, social work, the Health Sciences Library System and the University Library System.

There are no vacancies in information science, law or business.

The deadline for Faculty Assembly nominees is March 20.
