Provost responds to regional faculty criticism

Provost James V. Maher did not attend the Nov. 29 Faculty Assembly meeting, but was asked by the University Times to comment on statements made by regional campus faculty leaders at that meeting. Provost Maher issued the following statement in response:

“The presidents of the campus senates at Bradford and Greensburg raised budget issues in their presentations at the Faculty Assembly. These campuses are both treated on an equal basis with other schools of the University when program planning is evaluated and budgets are set. All schools of the University wish for more budget, and many sincerely but erroneously regard themselves as cash cows for the rest of the University. The Greensburg case is not different in kind from those of the other schools.

“On the Bradford campus, the ratio of costs to revenues is quite high by the standards applied to other undergraduate units of the University, both in Pittsburgh and at other regional campuses. For historical reasons that are not very important to discuss in this context, Bradford is now going through a process of tying budget to planning that went on elsewhere in the University 10 years ago. I am confident that, after the Bradford campus redesigns its activities using the planning and budgeting process to bring its costs into line with University norms, this campus will have a strong program with a stable and appropriate enrollment.”
