Green college guide lists Pitt

Pitt has been included in “The Princeton Review’s Guide to 322 Green Colleges.”

The guide profile of Pitt notes the University was a signatory of the international 1990 Talloires Declaration, supporting mobilization of the resources of higher education on behalf of sustainability. It also noted Pitt is pursuing LEED certification for 10 projects and that the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine, the Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation and the Benedum Hall phase I renovation achieved LEED gold certification.

Since the 2012 data were submitted, two additional Pitt construction/renovation projects — the Chevron Annex and the Biomedical Science Tower’s 12th-floor renovation — have achieved LEED gold certification. Pitt has nine current projects pursuing LEED certification.

The Princeton Review chose the schools for inclusion based on ratings derived from a 50-question survey it conducted in 2012 of administrators at hundreds of four-year colleges. To be included in the guide, schools had to have a rating of at least 83 out of a possible score of 99. Pitt received a rating of 97. The Princeton Review analyzed data from the survey about the schools’ course offerings, campus infrastructure, activities and career preparation programs to measure the schools’ commitments to the environment and to sustainability.
