Pitt among top employers for workers over 50

For the third time, Pitt has been recognized as one of the 2013 Best Employers for Workers Over 50.

Pitt ranked 44th among the top 50 health systems, corporations, government agencies and nonprofits listed by AARP and the Society for Human Resource Management. The University ranked 43rd in the previous listing, which was compiled in 2011, and 33rd in the ranking prior to that, which was published in 2009.

Singled out for notice was Pitt’s professional development workshop, “Please Respect My Generation,” which presents methods for bridging the gap between generations and shows participants how to avoid conflict and increase productivity in their generationally diverse workplaces.

The National Institutes of Health gained top honors this year.

Any U.S.-based employer with at least 50 employees is eligible to apply for the Best Employers award. Candidates are vetted to ensure that practices meet the needs of mature workers. Key areas of consideration include: recruiting practices; opportunities for training, education and career development; workplace accommodations; alternative work options, such as flexible scheduling, job sharing and phased retirement; employee health and retirement benefits, and retiree work opportunities.

The top Best Employers this year will be profiled in the August-September issue of AARP The Magazine.
