Enid Goldberg, dean of the School of Nursing from 1973 to 1991, died Feb. 22, 2000. She was 74.

The fourth dean of the school, Goldberg received three degrees from Pitt's School of Nursing — a bachelor's in nursing education (1950), a master's in nursing education (1953), and a doctorate (1968). She also received a diploma in nursing degree from St. Francis Hospital of Pittsburgh in 1946.

Goldberg worked in psychiatric nursing for many years before beginning her academic career at Pitt in 1958.

After resigning as dean, Goldberg served as professor emeritus at the school and taught until her retirement in 1994. In 1992, she began researching the history of the school, work that culminated in a book published in 1996.

In addition to serving in many national and state nursing organizations, Goldberg was a founding member of both the Pennsylvania Higher Education Nursing Schools, Inc. and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Nursing Association.

Among the many honors she received was the 1981 Honorary Recognition Award from the Pennsylvania Nurses Association for distinguished service to the profession of nursing in Pennsylvania.

Nursing Dean Ellen Rudy says that Goldberg will be remembered as a strong leader who continually challenged her faculty and students to reach greater heights. "Dr. Goldberg experienced the evolution of the nursing profession over the last 50 years and contributed to the field in many ways. Not only was she instrumental in helping to establish one of the first nurse practitioner programs in the state, she was a constant supporter of nursing research," Rudy said. "Dr. Goldberg will be missed by her many friends and admirers at the School of Nursing and in the nursing community."

Memorial contributions may be made to the Enid Goldberg Visiting Lectureship Fund, School of Nursing, 350 Victoria Hall.

A campus memorial service for Goldberg is being planned for a later date.
