Trustees to vote on med school tenure change

A proposal to give clinical faculty in Pitt's School of Medicine more time to earn tenure has cleared another hurdle.

Under a plan endorsed May 18 by the Board of Trustees' academic affairs/libraries committee, such faculty would have 10 years, instead of the traditional seven years, to demonstrate their scholarly and teaching abilities.

Given the growing and unpredictable hospital workloads of clinical faculty, a seven-year probationary period for them is no longer feasible, medical school administrators say.

The extension plan requires approval by the full Board of Trustees, which is expected to consider the proposal at its June 29 meeting.

Board approval is required because the change would alter Pitt bylaws.

Medical school faculty and administrators, Faculty Assembly and Senate Council have endorsed the proposal.
