Cancer center pavilion to honor physician

The Shadyside Hospital Foundation of UPMC Shadyside has given $5 million to the Hillman Cancer Center to help develop the William M. Cooper, M.D., Ambulatory Pavilion.

The pavilion will be located at the Hillman Cancer Center, slated to open in 2002, and will be a "one-stop shop" for centralized services such as outpatient cancer treatment, pharmacy consultations and cancer screenings.

Cooper, head of the foundation board of directors since 1992, chaired the hospital's department of medicine from 1980 to 1992 and served on the hospital's board of directors from 1989 to 1997. In 1990, he was appointed distinguished clinical professor of medicine at Pitt's School of Medicine.

In 1995, Shadyside Hospital (now UPMC Shadyside) created its first teaching chair in his honor. The William M. Cooper, M.D., J.D., Chair in Medicine is funded by a $2.6 million endowment.
