At a chocolate ribbon-cutting ceremony last week, Frank and Athena Sarris, founders and owners of Sarris Candies, based in Canonsburg, opened the doors to the newly named Frank Sarris Outpatient Clinic at the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute, located in UPMC Montefiore.

The renaming of the outpatient clinic recognizes the Sarris family’s $5 million donation to the Thomas E. Starzl Legacy Endowment Fund for transplantation research. The recently renovated Sarris Outpatient Clinic is home to all abdominal organ and lung transplant recipients from UPMC’s cardiothoracic surgery division who come in for pre- and post-surgical care. The clinic houses 18 examination rooms, four conference rooms, two phlebotomy labs as well as additional office space for administrators and medical records.

Frank Sarris received a living donor kidney transplant at UPMC in 2002. Since his transplant, Sarris has participated in many organ donor awareness events and was honored last year by the National Kidney Foundation of Western Pennsylvania.
