Pitt center wins EUCE award

The EU Center of Excellence/European Studies Center (EUCE/ESC) has won the 2014 EUCE Outstanding Activity Award for “Conversations on Europe.”

This is the second time in three years that the Pitt center has won the award.

“Conversations on Europe” is a virtual roundtable series that uses videoconferencing technology to offer Pitt students, faculty and members of the local community the opportunity to participate in discussions on contemporary European-centered topics with other students and experts from across the U.S. and Europe.

“We competed with the best in the nation in European Union studies,” said Ron Linden, director of Pitt’s EUCE/ESC.  “Winning the award is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our EUCE staff.”

Linden added that the center will expand the program this fall to include K-12 teachers from Pittsburgh and rural Pennsylvania.

The award competition, run by the EUCE at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, was judged by a committee of representatives from the Bulgarian, Lithuanian and Romanian consulates in Chicago, and the EU Delegation to the U.S.

Program topics included European Parliament elections, British and Scottish nationalism, the effect of the NSA spy scandal, and the European positions of France, Croatia and Turkey, among others.

In the upcoming academic year, the program will focus on 25 years after the fall of the Berlin wall, Europe and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the effects of Syrian refugees in the European neighborhood.
