Architects' firm sets up scholarships

In celebration of its 75th anniversary, Hayes Large Architects/Pittsburgh has created an annual scholarship for students in Pitt's School of Education and Graduate School of Public Health.

Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic performance and research papers highlighting a student's "understanding of the importance that the quality of a built environment brings to the ultimate achievement of educational goals." Long known as the "educators' architect," Hayes Large has earned national recognition for excellence in school and classroom planning and design.

"We established the scholarship program to reflect our firm's commitment to partnering with educators that understand the importance of design to excellence in education as well as health care," said John Missell, a senior associate with Hayes Large.

Scholarships for the fall term were awarded to Maria Hoffmaster, a graduate student in the School of Education's administrative and polices studies program, and James Pavlicek, a graduate student in the School of Public Health.
