UPMC physicians top the list of Pittsburgh Magazine’s “Top Doctors” survey.

The May issue of Pittsburgh Magazine lists 110 UPMC and UPMC-affiliated physicians among the 134 selected as top doctors. In most categories, UPMC doctors were the only physicians recognized. The magazine commissions the independent survey each year.

The listing was compiled by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. whose physician-led research team follows a screening process to select top doctors on the national and regional levels. They identify highly skilled, exceptional doctors by evaluating their medical education, training and hospital appointments, and by surveying area hospital leaders and physicians.

“Because UPMC is the largest health system in the region, it is not surprising that our doctors would be well represented on the list,” said Loren Roth, UPMC chief medical officer. “But the dominance of UPMC physicians across so many categories on the list underscores the exceptional quality of our medical staff.”

UPMC physicians were recognized for excellence in the following specialties: adolescent medicine, cardiovascular disease, dermatology, diabetes, endocrinology, family medicine, gastroenterology, geriatric medicine, gynecologic oncology, hematology, internal medicine, medical oncology, nephrology, neurology, neurological surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology, pediatrics, pediatric cardiology, pediatric endocrinology, pediatric gastroenterology, pediatric hematology/oncology, pediatric surgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, plastic surgery/hand, plastic surgery/reconstructive, psychiatry, psychiatry/child and adolescent, pulmonary disease, radiation oncology, reproductive endocrinology, rheumatology surgery, surgery/oncology, surgery/trauma, transplantation and urology.
