George J. Wischner

George J. Wischner, professor of psychology at Pitt from 1955 to 1972, died Aug. 21, 1997, at his home in Sagamore Hills, Ohio. He was 83.

He received his B.A. from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York in 1938; his M.A. from the University of Iowa in 1941, and his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 1947.

Prior to joining the faculty at Pitt, Wischner was a faculty member at the University of Missouri, the University of Iowa and the University of Illinois. He also served as director of research of the training methods division at George Washington University's human resources research office.

Wischner left Pitt in 1972 to become professor and chairperson of psychology at Cleveland State University. He retired in 1979.

He was a fellow of the American Psychological Association and of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and a former member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Consulting Psychology and the Journal of Speech and Hearing Disorders.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Ellen (Gerlach) Wischner; two daughters, Claudia Reder and Cathy Sola; a stepdaughter, Cathy Dawn Finch; a stepson, Mike Carder, a sister, Kay Kerness, and four grandchildren.
