How much is too much when it comes to the Internet?

Following are 10 signs that constitute pathological Internet use or addiction, according to UPB's Kimberly Young. Individuals who meet four or more of the criteria over a 12-month period could be classified as dependent.

* Do you feel preoccupied by the Internet and do such things as think about it while off-line?

* Do you feel a need to use the Internet with increasing amounts of time in order to achieve satisfaction?

* Do you have an inability to control your Internet use?

* Do you feel restless or irritable when attempting to cut down or stop your Internet use?

* Do you use the Internet as a way of escaping problems or of relieving a mood, such as feelings of helplessness, guilt, anxiety or depression?

* Do you lie to family members or friends to conceal the extent of your involvement with the Internet?

* Do you jeopardize or risk the loss of significant relationships, job, educational or career opportunities because of the Internet?

* Do you, after spending an excessive amount of money on on-line fees, often return to the Internet the next day?

* Do you go through withdrawal when off-line and suffer depression or anxiety?

* Do you frequently stay on-line longer than you originally had intended?
