A couple of days in the life of a candidate

So you want to be dean of an arts and sciences school? Be prepared for back-to-back interviews, business meals, lectures and public forums — and that's before you get the job.

Having already been interviewed by members of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) dean search committee, the five semi-finalists for the FAS deanship must undergo 48 hours' worth of meetings with prospective colleagues and constituents from FAS, the University community, the Pitt central administration, and the department with which the candidate potentially would be affiliated as a tenured professor.

Two semi-finalists have completed the ordeal so far: Pitt chemistry professor John Cooper and David J. Magidson, a theatre arts professor at Wayne State University. A third — Janice Madden, vice provost and economics professor at the University of Pennsylvania — arrived here yesterday, Dec. 3. Florida State's Charles Cnudde and Thomas Scott of the University of Delaware are set to visit next week. See story on page 4. Madden's itinerary is typical of the semi-finalists' schedules: Dec. 3 6:30-9 p.m. — Dinner at the LeMont Restaurant with professors Patricia Beeson and Jack Ochs, of the economics department, and Johanna Moore, of computer science.
