Draft report on Athletics available

Since last March, approximately 50 members of the University community have been evaluating the Athletics department's compliance with operating principles established by the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA). The self-study is the first step in a new certification process for Division I institutions.

Four subcommittees have been working in conjunction with the NCAA self-study steering committee to complete the first phase of the evaluation. The subcommittees have completed their evaluation and have prepared a draft report, which has been reviewed by the steering committee.

The draft report is available for University-wide review and comment. The current draft of the report will be available at: http://www.pitt.edu/~iapitt/ncaa Copies of the draft report also will be available at the Hillman Library reserve desk and the Athletics director's office.

Comments on the draft report should be sent by Jan. 30 to the chairperson of the steering committee, John Elliott, 1809 Cathedral of Learning or jpe@budget.ba.pitt.edu A final report will be mailed to the NCAA in February 1998.

In May 1998, a five-member NCAA peer review team will visit the University and begin reviewing the University's self-study in order to verify its accuracy, whether it involved campus-wide participation, and how well the Athletics department conforms to NCAA rules and operating principles.

The peer review team will submit a report to the NCAA Committee on Athletics Certification. After reviewing the University's self-study report and the report from the peer review team, the NCAA Committee on Athletics Certification will make its decision about certification.

Additional information on the NCAA certification process can be found in the March 20, 1997, University Times.
