University helps to sponsor May 10 Race for the Cure

The University will serve as a sponsor for this year's Race for the Cure scheduled for Mother's Day, May 10, starting at 8:30 a.m. The sixth annual 5k run/walk and one-mile fun walk honors breast cancer survivors and supports the fight against the disease. During the race many runners/walkers wear the names of family members or friends stricken with breast cancer and many survivors wear special visors to demonstrate their victory. Last year nearly 14,000 runners and walkers participated, making it the largest race in western Pennsylvania.

Through its sponsorship, the University will provide the Forbes Quad Galleria as a registration, packet pick up and race staging area. Racers/walkers will also be permitted to park on campus the day of the event and take Pitt shuttle buses to the starting line in Schenley Park.

In addition to serving as a sponsor, the University is also encouraging departments to form teams to run or walk. Teams interested in running or walking should call Bill Young in Public Affairs at 624-4209. Volunteers interested in assisting with race activities should call Volunteer Pool coordinator Steve Zupcic at 383-1667.
