Books and Journals

BOOKS & JOURNALS

In this 27th annual edition of Books and Journals by the Faculty, we recognize Pitt faculty members who write or edit books as well as edit or co-edit journals.

Book submissions have been arranged according to school, and listed alphabetically by title for easier reference. In instances of co-authored and co-edited books, the Pitt faculty member is listed first.

Following the Books by the Faculty section is Journals by the Faculty, which also is presented by school and listed alphabetically according to title. In instances of co-edited journals, the Pitt faculty member appears first.

We regret that space constraints prohibit the inclusion of more publications created by Pitt faculty and staff. For example, our book listing does not include individual chapters, articles, poems and similar pieces written or edited by Pitt faculty members. In the journal section, only editors and co-editors are included; other contributors, such as authors of individual articles and editorial board members, are not listed because of space constraints. Books and Journals by the Faculty was compiled by Linda Howard and Lee Tarullo from information submitted by the faculty members themselves. Books in this year's publication have a 1997 copyright date.

IEEE Computer Society Press.

This book addresses the latest developments in transaction processing and details the motivation and challenges for transaction processing. It begins with a discussion of traditional transaction processing and leads into more advanced techniques that depend on the programmer providing additional input parameters enabling the system to process transactions in a more sophisticated way. It also examines techniques based on the semantics of the data and operations that enhance performance without affecting the way transactions are programmed. Brahms: Symphony No. 1

by David Brodbeck, associate professor, music.

Cambridge University Press.

Brahms's First Symphony was awaited with a tense anticipation the likes of which few other compositions have had to endure. The book begins with an account of the lengthy genesis and complicated background to the writing of the symphony, before providing a thorough critical reading of the work, movement by movement. In particular, the book reveals a dense web of extra-compositional allusions — references in the music to works by J.S. Bach, Beethoven, Schubert and Robert Schumann — in which, the author argues, much meaning resides. Finally, the controversial status and relationship of the composition in the Beethovenian tradition is considered alongside other important issues in the early history of this key work in the symphonic repertory.
