UPCI gets grant to increase awareness of skin cancer

The University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) has been awarded a $750,000 three-year contract by the Pennsylvania Department of Health's Cancer Control Program to increase awareness of the risk factors and preventive measures of skin cancer.

Joyce Yasko, UPCI associate director for clinical and network programs and principal investigator, explained that the initiative will focus on teaching parents how to decrease their children's exposure to ultraviolet light. Researchers have determined that sunburn during childhood years is a significant risk factor for the development of melanoma later in life.
