What we earn: Staff/administration salaries

What we earn

While the University’s annual “Mean and Median Salaries of Full-Time Employees” report once again shows the differences among the highest and lowest average and median salaries for Pitt staff and faculty, the fiscal year 2014 report includes some additional information.

The FY14 report, presented March 20 to the University Senate budget policies committee (BPC), for the first time clarifies which job type, job family and job classification are included under each faculty or staff report category. (www.utimes.pitt.edu/documents/Mean&MedianReport2014.pdf)

Robert Goga of the Office of Institutional Research, who presented the Management Information and Analysis office report, said he added the cross-referencing appendix at BPC’s request.

BPC Staff Association Council representative Adriana Maguina-Ugarte, who had asked for the extra details after the FY13 report, said: “It’s very nebulous to just have ‘executive/administrative and managerial’ as one level for staff, or ‘other professionals,’ which covers a lot of people.”

Goga pointed out some caveats: For instance, librarians in the University Library System responsibility center are listed by their specific job classifications for faculty librarians. However, faculty librarians in the School of Law and in Falk Library (which is under the Senior Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences responsibility center) are categorized under “lecturer/other” in accord with their faculty rank of “other.”

Also, the “department chair” job classification appears in the “lecturer/other” category, but not all department chairs are included on that line in the report.

Some faculty who are department chairs may remain on the faculty line corresponding to their academic rank if no one took action to update their job classification, Goga explained. He said he could not quantify how many chairs were included in a particular category.

Goga noted, too, that not all of the University’s job classifications are represented in the report, pointing out that some might not be filled by regular or by full-time staff.

The FY14 report presents data from Oct. 31, 2013, covering all regular (not temporary) full-time employees, with the exception of research associates and postdoctoral associates.

The report lists mean and median salaries by responsibility center, categorizes faculty by rank and divides staff into four categories: executive, administrative and managerial; other professionals; secretarial and clerical; and technical, skilled and service.

Salary data are suppressed in categories with three or fewer employees, to maintain the privacy of the individuals, Goga said. Salaries for faculty on 12-month contracts were converted to a nine-month equivalent by using a multiplier of 0.818181.

BPC co-chair Beverly Gaddy inquired whether the salary range in dollars could be included along with the mean and median, but others argued that the information could make it possible to identify the individuals at the top and bottom ends of the distribution.

BPC co-chair John J. Baker commented: “I think with this report most people can look at the mean and the median and evaluate their own situation. That’s the importance of it. … not that we identify what the highest salary is.” Pitt’s report, listed by responsibility center, also is more helpful than faculty salary reports that provide institution-wide averages, due to discipline-based pay differences, he said.

BPC met in closed session for part of the meeting to deliberate on a proposed new report on faculty salary and teaching loads.
