GSPH 5th in NIH funding

With a total exceeding $23 million in grants and awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Pitt's Graduate School of Public Health (GSPH) is ranked fifth among all U.S. schools of public health for 1997 NIH funding.

The rankings include awards for research, training, contracts, fellowship programs and other grants from the NIH. This is the sixth consecutive year GSPH has been ranked in the top five.

"This ranking is a testament to the excellence of our faculty and the innovative research they are conducting," said Donald Mattison, dean of GSPH.

Groundbreaking research at GSPH has yielded insights into the workings of the AIDS virus and genetic factors related to cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer's disease. Focusing on prevention, public health researchers promote healthy living and identify risk factors for heart disease and other disorders.

GSPH also has played a role in the managed care revolution by guiding and interpreting policies and laws affecting health care and medicine.

In the latest U.S. News and World Report rankings, GSPH is in the top 10 of public health schools in the U.S.
