Pitt gets $1 million from Heinz Endowments

The University has received grant money totaling more than $1 million from the Howard Heinz Endowments to assist family-oriented businesses, improve local school districts, help struggling families and provide aid to low-income households with young children.

The grants include:

* $450,000 to the Office of Child Development Early Head Start Program, which provides comprehensive support services, including home visits, to low-income families with young children;

* $250,000 to the Institute for Learning, part of the Learning Research and Development Center, which helps western Pennsylvania schools create high-performance learning environments by bringing the best current knowledge on the process of learning to area teachers;

* $210,000 to expand the capacity of the Katz School's Business Family Enterprise Center, which provides educational and consulting services to area family-owned firms;

* $135,000 to provide training and technical assistance to the family support movement in Allegheny County. Pitt helps train the staffs of 23 county family support centers and administers a number of them. The centers teach families how to help themselves through use of community resources.

The Heinz Endowments are among the nation's largest philanthropic establishments, supporting the efforts of nonprofit organizations in the arts and culture, education, youth and families, economic opportunity and the environment.
