Pitt unions win UW award
The 2014 United Way fundraising efforts of Pitt’s building trades, service employees and operating engineers in Facilities Management were recognized with The Paul Stackhouse Award at the local United Way’s June 10 award luncheon. This award is given to labor unions that achieve top fundraising results.
Pitt unions had a 49 percent increase in United Way donations, to $14,335, and 14 additional donors.
Overall, Pitt’s 2014 Pitt United Way campaign had its second-highest year ever, raising $656,600 — just $8,400 behind the 2013 fundraising peak of $665,000.
About half — $345,555 — of this year’s total was directed to United Way’s Impact Fund, which gives money to selected area agencies that tackle issues surrounding children’s success in school, family stability, safe senior living, living with disabilities and the emergency needs of local communities.
Anne Franks, executive director for administration in Institutional Advancement, said that about 2,300 people at Pitt contributed to the United Way of Allegheny County during the most recent campaign. “One of the strong values of the University is we want to be a strong partner in the community,” Franks said. “And people who give to the United Way are committed to strengthening the entire community.”
