Concerts slated on Heinz Chapel's newly reconstructed organ

After more than a year of work, the third organ to serve Heinz Memorial Chapel is ready to be unveiled. University organist Robert Lord will perform the inaugural concert on the newly reconstructed organ on Sept. 24 at 3 p.m. The concert is the first of four that will be performed on the organ this fall. Other concerts are set for Oct. 8, Nov. 12 and Dec. 10. All concerts will begin at 3 p.m.

Shadyside Presbyterian Church, whose organ also recently underwent reconstruction, will follow the Heinz Chapel concert on Sept. 24 with a dedicatory recital of its own at 5 p.m.

Together, the Heinz Chapel organ and the Shadyside Presbyterian Church organ give Pittsburgh two of the most distinguished pipe organs in the world. Both instruments were reconstructed by the Reuter Organ Co. of Lawrence, Kan.

The Heinz Chapel organ, which was a gift of the Howard Heinz Endowment, has 4,272 pipes arrayed in 73 ranks and three electronic pedal stops.
