Exchange agreement

Pitt signed an educational exchange agreement Sept. 14 with the Universidade Estadual Paulista, which has its main campus in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The accord was signed in the office of Interim Chancellor Mark Nordenberg (left) and provides for a wide range of academic and research exchanges between the two universities. Signing for the Universidade Estadual Paulista was its rector, Arthur Roquete de Macedo, a surgeon who once studied under Pitt liver transplant pioneer Thomas Starzl. The universities initially will focus their joint research on educational reform, public policy and environmental studies, said Pitt Latin American Studies Director Billie R. DeWalt, who worked out details of the agreement with officials from the Brazilian university. Like most of Pitt's other foreign university exchange agreements, this one will run for five years with the option of renewal after that point, DeWalt said.
