Hearings are scheduled in three dean searches

The search committees for new deans of two Pitt schools — the Katz Graduate School of Business and the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA) — will hold open hearings Oct. 12 in 2P56 Forbes Quadrangle.

A search committee for dean of the College of General Studies (CGS) will hold an open forum Oct. 19 in 504 William Pitt Union.

The public forums are intended to give members of the University community the chance to tell committee members what qualities and talents they should seek in the new deans.

Students and staff are invited to attend the business dean hearing from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Faculty are invited to attend from noon to 1:30 p.m. The GSPIA hearing is open to faculty, staff and students from 2 to 4 p.m. The Oct. 19 CGS forum is open to students, staff and faculty from 9 to 11 a.m.

All three of the committees also invite written nominations and comments on the searches.

Nominations and correspondence on the Katz school search should be sent to: W. Edward Sell, chair, KGSB Dean Search Committee, 826 Cathedral of Learning.

For the GSPIA search, nominations and correspondence should be sent to: Morton Coleman, chair, GSPIA Dean Search Committee, 826 Cathedral of Learning.

Correspondence and nominations for the CGS search can be sent to: Jack Daniel, chair, CGS Dean Search Committee, 801 Cathedral of Learning.

Current Katz school Dean H.J. Zoffer plans to step down as early as June if his successor is found by then. Davis Bobrow resigned as GSPIA dean in January, citing differences over management style and philosophy with Provost James Maher. GSPIA professor Martin Staniland has been the school's interim dean since March. Robert Comfort has been serving as interim CGS dean since John Bolvin retired in February 1994.

Members of the recently appointed CGS dean search committee include: Keith Brown, anthropology; Iain Campbell, biology; Comfort, CSG; Dennis Cox, student representative; Daniel, Provost office; Kathleen DeWalt, anthropology; Kathleen Flanigan, student affairs; Ida Flynn, information sciences; Audrey Murrell, KGSB; William Reed, alumni representative; Lee Weinberg, GSPIA; H. Anne Weis, art and architecture; Darlene Zellers, continuing education; Barbara Mowery, advising center; Joan Slezak and Lois Telipsky, both of the Provost office.
