PEOPLE OF THE TIMES

Deane L. Root, curator of the Stephen Foster Memorial, has been appointed a delegate to the American Council of Learned Societies, the congress of learned scholars in the humanities. Root will represent the Sonneck Society for American Music for a three-year term, making him one of the three music scholars on the 54-member council.

Violinist Roger Zahab and pianist Eric Moe, faculty members in the Department of Music, have released a CD entitled "John Cage Thirteen Harmonies." On the CD, Zahab and Moe perform Cage's "Thirteen Harmonies" and Zahab's "Verging Lightfall."

Alan Lesgold, professor of psychology and intelligent systems and associate director of the Learning Research and Development Center, has been selected as one of three winners of the first annual Educom Medal Awards Program. Lesgold was chosen for his work in the field of computer-assisted instruction. Educom is a nonprofit consortium of universities and corporate affiliates that promotes the exchange of ideas related to computing in higher education. The Educom Medal Awards Program was created to honor those whose professional achievements contribute to the improvement of learning and the promotion of information technology.
