University Press poetry prize awarded

Sandy Solomon has been awarded the 1995 Agnes Lynch Starrett Poetry Prize by the University of Pittsburgh Press. The prize consists of a $2,500 cash award and publication in the Pitt poetry series.

Solomon's book, "Pears, Lake, Sun," was selected from more than 900 manuscripts submitted for the 1995 competition and will be published in fall 1996.

Solomon's poems have narrative and lyrical qualities that look deeply into the nature and causes of things and the relationships among them.

A graduate of the Johns Hopkins University Writing Seminars and the Warren College Program for Writers, Solomon was founding executive director of two national nonprofit organizations, the Coalition on Human Needs and the National Neighborhood Coalition, both based in Washington, D.C.

Solomon's poems have appeared in numerous publications, including The New Yorker, The New Republic, The Threepenny Review, The Times Literary Supplement and Partisan Review. She is currently a freelance writer and editor living in Princeton, N.J.

The Starrett prize is named in honor of a former director of the University of Pittsburgh Press. It is open to any poet who has not yet published a full-length manuscript.
