SBDC sets up small-business Web site

Pitt's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) has established a business reference site for the small-business community on the World Wide Web. The address is: http://www.pitt.edu/~sbdc/ "The greatest benefit of the SBDC web sites is that we have gathered the most important information for small businesses and located it in one place," said Ann Dugan, director of the SBDC. "The Web site is a good starting point for entrepreneurs looking for information on the Internet." During a visit to the site, an entrepreneur can:

* Learn how the SBDC can help increase business.

* Communicate with the SBDC.

* Learn about and register for specialized training classes.

* Register for the PENS international trade and Bid Alert government contract leads programs.

* Discuss issues facing their business and seek answers from other entrepreneurs in a newsgroup forum.

* Link up with others sites containing business information.

According to Dugan, the site is a very cost-effective way for the SBDC to use its limited resources to better serve Pittsburgh's small-business community.

"The site also helps Pittsburgh in its efforts to promote itself as a leader in the emerging information-based economy," Dugan said. "The SBDC's Internet presence helps demonstrate that Pittsburgh is in the vanguard of combining its economic development assistance resources and its information technology resources to create a more fertile environment for tomorrow's business leaders." Pitt's SBDC is funded by the U.S. Small Business Administration, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the University.
