2nd annual Young Women in Science Day set for April 12 in medical school

In an increasingly technological society, a basic understanding of science and mathematics is essential to maintain a competent work force and to exercise the responsibilities of citizenship in a democracy.

With nearly two-thirds of new entrants in the work force between now and the year 2000 expected to be women, the current low level of participation of women in science, engineering and mathematics is a serious national problem.

To address the issue, the School of Medicine has designated April 12 as its second annual "Young Women in Science Day" and has invited 100 seventh grade girls from Pittsburgh to attend a workshop at the medical school.

From 9:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., the girls will be treated as "visiting scientists" and given an opportunity to experience science in a hands-on manner with women faculty members in the School of Medicine.

The program has been designed to allow each participant to complete an actual experiment and discuss its current and potential application with a woman faculty member.

During the lunch period, the girls will be able to discuss their career aspirations with women graduate students, medical students, faculty and administrators who have volunteered their time.

Each participant will receive a certificate signed by the medical school dean indicating that she has served as a "visiting scientist" for a day at Pitt's School of Medicine.
