14 oncologists form network

Fourteen of the region's leading oncologists have joined together to form a community network in association with the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI).

Called Hematology-Oncology Associates, the network currently serves hospitals throughout Allegheny County, as well as Latrobe, Greensburg, Jeannette, Uniontown and Weirton, W. Va.

As more oncologists join the network, it will expand to cover all of western Pennsylvania.

"In response to market forces, it is our ultimate goal to form a comprehensive system of cancer care that is geographically convenient," said Ronald Herberman, director of the UPCI.

The network will give its patients increased access to the latest therapies and technologies coming out of the UPCI, the region's only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center.
