Transplant institute named to honor Starzl
In recognition of his contributions to the field of organ transplantation, the Pittsburgh Transplantation Institute of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) has been renamed the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute.
Starzl, who performed the first liver transplant in 1963, established the transplantation center in 1981 and serves as its director. Since 1990, the center has both conducted transplantation research and offered clinical services for transplantation patients.
Renaming of the institute is part of a larger effort to create an endowment honoring Starzl and insure the center's long-term fiscal health. The first phase of this effort created an endowed chair, the Thomas E. Starzl Professorship, in transplant surgery in the School of Medicine last March.
