Pitt helps to establish applied economics program in Slovakia

Pitt, in co-operation with several European universities, is establishing a new applied economics program in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Developed at the Academic Istropolitana in Bratislava, the program is meant to help satisfy Eastern Europe's demand for managers and analysts with a working understanding of free-market business practices.

"Under the communists, all economic instruction emphasized Marxist theory," says Kevin Sontheimer, director of Pitt's Economic Policy Institute. "As a result, there is little understanding of market processes and sound economic analysis in the former Soviet-bloc countries." Funded in part by a $566,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the new program will give students two years of intensive training in economic theory and its practical application.
